UNI JA MR。    Colombo, Oct 19 (UNI) Sri Lanka would be in a far more difficult situation if not for financial assistance provided by the Indian government, the leader of the island nation's most influential leftist party said in remarks published on Wednesday.
Speaking to a television channel, Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the Janatha Vimukti Peramuna (JVP) compared the $3.8 billion assistance provided by India within six months with the $2.9 billion promised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over a period of four years.
The Island newspaper quoted Dissanayake as appreciating the Indian help, "at a time when the government (of Sri Lanka) was unable to meet even the basic needs of the population".
Asserting that the situation in the country continued to deteriorate, the JVP leader warned of a fresh round of public protests against the government.
But he urged the public to desist from violence. If the public resorted to violence, the government would exploit the situation to unleash the police and the military, he warned.
The JVP carried out two failed major insurrections in 1971 and in 1987-89 to capture power, leaving thousands dead.
